What do we carry from our forebears?
We all come from two other people and they from four and eight and 16, 32, 64, and 128 and on and on. But most of us grew up with a mom and a dad or some adult guardians or guardian, a grandparent or two. There are some adults that you first looked up to, to learn about how to be in this world — plus the genetic make up of those two parents and all that came before you.

So what is it that makes you you? What parts of you physically, emotionally, intellectually, behaviorally, and spiritually have you gotten from your forebears? Do you hear your father’s voice come out your mouth sometimes, do you feel like you react to situations just like your mom? Do you say the things to your kids that you heard your parents say that at the time you said “I will never say that when I have kids.” Those little traits, gestures, and mannerisms that we display, do we hate that way we disliked that in our parents. Are our attitudes similar to the ones we have criticized our parents for?

It is true we have choices in who we are BUT only when we recognize that there are other ways of being, that we can change or remain the same.
When we begin to see ourselves as we truly are, not some delusion that we are who we hope to be but how we truly are, the light/shadow, good/bad, positive/negative, yin/yang…
  • Are you aware of the challenges your ancestors faced in their lifetimes?
  • Why do you think you “chose” your specific forebears? What positive behaviors did you learn from them?
  • What negative behaviors have “stuck” with you that you want to be rid of?
  • If you have children yourself, how have you influenced them in the ways that you were influenced by your caregivers?
  •   Have you needed to forgive your ancestors?  Have you?
  • Have you needed to forgive your children? Have you?
  • Have you needed to forgive yourself? Have you?
  • How much energy, time, money, etcetera have you spent consciously OR unconsciously celebrating the joy of — or healing from the pain of — your ancestors?

A Google search for the word "community" reveals roughly 2,450,000,000 results, while a search for the word "self" reveals roughly 640,000,000! A difference of roughly roughly four times more information on community. I guess it may actually be more important... hmm.
